About

Membership, Officers & Structure
The Providence Campus Student Government Association is comprised of all undergraduate students at Johnson & Wales University, Providence Campus. There are three equal branches of government, each having its own function.  The Association’s structure resembles the federal government in many regards, but many political concepts of the federal government do not apply.

Executive Branch
The Association President is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Student Government Association. The President’s primary duties include serving as the liaison between the student body, faculty, administrators and the University Senate. The President also sits as a member of University-created committees to make sure the needs of students are being heard and met.

Legislative Branch
The Speaker of the Senate is responsible for chairing the University Senate and ensuring Senate business is handled smoothly. The Senate is the primary legislative body comprised of 14 elected University Senators, half of which are elected in the spring.  The remainder are elected in the fall.  The Senate is responsible for addressing student issues and concerns, and for the general management of the Association.

The Speaker of the House is responsible for chairing the House of Representatives, which represents all of the clubs and organizations on campus.  The House annually publishes appropriation guidelines for use in the following year, and a majority of it’s time is spent on appropriating funds to clubs and organizations.  All clubs and organizations must be recognized by the House of Representatives to get funding, and must abide by all requests of the House.

Judicial Branch
The Judicial Court handles all questions of constitutionality and is responsible for interpreting the bylaws.  The Court serves the needs of the Senate, House, and Cabinet by resolving disputes and handling problems as they arise.

The Board of Elections is a division of the judicial branch and is responsible for independently conducting elections.  All Board members must maintain their independence and try to actively promote the Association to get candidates involved.  The Board only serves briefly and is not utilized for the full year.

Mission Statement
Our mission is to preserve an atmosphere of open communication and relationships between students and administrators, express and respond to student concerns and issues, encourage community involvement, and ensure the personal freedom and general welfare of the student body.
